Goreme is the most visited region of Cappadocia, hosting thousands of foreign and local visitors every year. The town is located about 12 kilometers from Nevsehir city, and is home to many churches and monasteries, as it is one of the oldest settlements in Cappadocia. The town is also situated at the center of the main valleys of Cappadocia, on the contrary, Avanos and Urgup.

Goreme is without a doubt, the star attraction and point of interest of any visit to Cappadocia. This lovely place is almost like an open-air museum surrounded by wonderful valleys and fairy chimneys, and has become one of the most frequented points of local and foreign tourists. Travelers are welcomed by big rocky formations like all are left from the “Stone Age”.

Majority of the houses and accommodation in Goreme are rock-cut houses or made from stone. That’s why you can’t recognize the district by day light but you will definitely see and enjoy the magical scenery of this place by night as the houses and hotels are enlightened.

Goreme Open Air Museum

Goreme Open Air Museum is a must see place in Goreme. Also one of the most popular places to see in Cappadocia. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985, comes first among the places to visit in the town.


Here you’ll experience and enjoy the impressive rock-cut churches with frescoes dating from the 10th century carved by early Christian monks and fine examples of Byzantine art at the museum.

Goreme Open Air Museum

The Elmali Church, Dark Church, Tokali Church, Yilanli Church, Saint Basil Chapel, Santa Barbara Chapel and Santa Catherine Chapel are the popular churches and chapels that worth a visit and see at the Goreme Open Air Museum.

Panoramic Viewpoints – Esentepe Hill

Panoramic viewpoints overlooking the amazing Goreme National Park, located in the hilly area on the Goreme-Avanos road, are very popular with the travelers. You can sit in one of the restaurants and cafes around here and watch the magnificent views and enjoy a nice meal.

Esentepe Hill

The Esentepe observation terrace is the most popular of these. Lovers Hill

Lovers Hill is situated right next to Goreme town and can be accessed by climbing a pathway along the central Goreme Mosque.

Pigeon Valley

Pigeon Valley is a fantastic place where certain cave dwellings have been painted white to attract the birds for their valuable droppings. The valley is also famous for its beautiful views.

Situated between Uchisar and Goreme, and famous for its beautiful landscapes, the valley takes its name from pigeons and ranks first among the popular, most known, and impressive valleys of Cappadocia. Shopping – What to Buy?

Since it is a touristic area, you’ll find shops mostly selling souvenirs in general. You can buy and present hand-woven carpets, rugs or runners to your loved ones from the Goreme region, which is famous for its hand-woven.

You can also choose fairy chimney sculptures and magnets, which are a miniature of the architectural structure of the region, as gifts.

How to Get to Goreme?

Goreme is situated about 305 km. from Ankara, 750 km. from Istanbul, 780 km. from Izmir, 60 km. from Kayseri, and 12 km. from Nevsehir.

There are NO direct international flights for Cappadocia region. Nearest local airports are situated in Nevsehir and Kayseri. You can find direct domestic flights to these cities from Istanbul and Izmir.

Nevsehir Kapadokya Airport (NAV) is the closest one (44 km.) to the Cappadocia, while you can find more flights to Kayseri Airport (ASR) (75 km.).

After reaching Kayseri or Nevsehir by land or plane, you can reach Goreme by minibuses in about 30 minutes from the airports. But this would be a hard way. Taking a taxi from the center, bus station or airport is another option.

As Cappadocia region is NOT a metropolitan one, mostly has a rural life, we highly recommend you take airport transfers to get to your hotel in Avanos, Goreme, Uchisar or Urgup town of Cappadocia. So that you can have a safe, comfortable and easy transport option to your hotel.

The Shared Shuttle (about €8 per person) or Private Shuttle (about €50 per person) is the most comfortable and convenient way to travel between the airports and Cappadocia and all neighboring regions.
